When women talk, they seek to establish closeness and friendship…they share. They validate their friends’ feelings, share intimate details, and seek to build rapport immediately. Men, on the other hand, tend to be more goal orientated. They use conversation to convey information, make points, reach objectives, give instructions, and relate a view. These are just some of the differences….

Download Mary’s Biography.

Women leaders face a daunting task to overcome differences in the workplace because women leaders are operating with what they know how to do… as women. And the world of business typically operates in a more male orientated way.

During this engaging talk, Mary Rezek will highlight techniques how to use power language to your advantage to have wider impact and influence. Mary will cover tips like:

· BOTTOM LINE: Limit rapport building and get to the point

· DECLARE: Make suggestions as statements in a low pitch and if interrupted, ignore and keep on going

· LISTENER CONCLUSIONS: Don’t discount what you are saying before you say it

· VERBAL JOUSTING: React assertively to banter to deflate and accommodate

Recognizing the male rules in the workplace and how to accept and acknowledge that the rules exist and then pivot on language and behavior is a solid step towards getting you and your team’s needs met. This is not about masculinizing the way women work in business. It is suggesting that by knowing the rules and being prepared to use new techniques, you will likely have a more positive, understood, sustainable outcome.

As a special thanks to 85 Broads Beijing for hosting her, Michelle has provided us with a set of TopGrading Tools that we can use in our own companies.

The Talent Review – the first step towards identifying your A, B, and C Players and creating a simple action plan that helps you determine where to spend your time on development and succession planning. See instructions and definitions within; remember – don’t be afraid of results the first time around, just be open and honest. cn-2013-MSC-Template-Talent-Review

Job Scorecards Samples – COO & GM – remember that you don’t need all 50 competencies for each position – choose those that are most important to you for the role; you may find that more entry level positions require only 10 – 20 competencies for review before making a hiring decision. Key point – you cannot successfully assess talent without first clarifying the exact job requirements, measures of success, and minimal competency requirements. Sample-COO-Scorecard Sample-JS-GM

The Screening & Topgrading Interview Questions & 50 Crucial Competencies – by following the questions within, you’ll get much better information during the interview, helping you make a more informed decision about who to hire and who to promote. Review the 50 crucial competencies and keep in mind that certain skills are “Hard to Change” and “Easy to Change”; being mindful of these areas when assessing talent will ensure you understand risks and learning needs for your new hires. F-MSC-Interviews-50-comps

Also, be sure to read the eBook on TG 201 – it will give you more ideas on the entire program. TG 201 Small v2

On March 8, 2013, 85 Broads Beijing, Capital M, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and the American Chamber of Commerce hosted the first ever Beijing mentoring walks, designed to bring together leading female executives from all sectors with ambitious young women aiming to follow in their footsteps. More than 100 women turned out in support for this event, and due to the overwhelming response, the four co-organizers have decided to make this a regular event.

The concept of the Mentoring Walk originally derived from American media icon Geraldine Laybourne, who launched mentoring walks to empower young women professionals in New York City and across the United States. The Beijing mentoring walks follow suit, and for the inaugural event more than 20 senior executives from international companies, government organizations and non-profits turned out to mentor 80 young professional women.

At the event, women signed up for one of the 20 mentors, who were only identified by their professions. After the dinner, each mentor was announced and joined by their mentees for a one-hour walking mentoring session around Qianmen.

Thanks to a very generous donation of 100 breakfasts from Michelle Garnaut, founder of Capital M and one of the driving forces of this Mentoring Walk, the full amount of the tickets for this event, RMB 10,000, went to benefit the Village People Project, an organization committed to improving the lives of women and children in rural areas throughout China.

In light of all the positive responses to the event, 85 Broads and our co-organizers have decided to make the Beijing Mentoring Walks a regular event. These walks will be limited to 20 attendees, and will take place on the second Friday of every month from April to November. For more information and the registration link, please make sure that you are signed up for and receiving our 85 Broads newsletters.

After a guest chef stint at The Peace Hotel in Shanghai in 1996, Michelle felt that Shanghai was ready for something similar, and in 1999 – when the rest of the Bund was a culinary desert – she opened M on the Bund on the historic waterfront. The first Glamour Room and Bar opened in 2001.

In 2002, the now-famous cultural events series was launched at the Glamour Bar, along with the enormously popular Shanghai International Literary Festival. By 2006, the Glamour Bar moved to a bigger, better and even more glamorous space on the 6th floor.

For her achievements, Michelle has been honored with awards that include Entrepreneur of the Year (International Woman of Influence Awards) and the Business Entrepreneurial Award (ANZ Australian Business Awards).
